Governess-turned-sleuth Miss Silver looks into the case of a Holocaust survivor who may have enemies to elude. William Smith isn’t sure what his name is, but he knows it isn’t William Smith. That was the name the Nazis gave him in 1942, when he was herded, along with so many others, into one of their nightmarish camps. They did their best to kill him, but he survived. Now the war is over and he’s back in England, ready to start over. But even a man with no past can’t escape history. William may yet learn his real name—but it could cost him his life in this suspenseful mystery starring an investigator who “has her place in detective fiction as surely as Lord Peter Wimsey or Hercule Poirot” (Manchester Evening News).

In his book author William P. Smith bridges the chasm between the heart and the head. Where is the reality of God in the middle of careers and groceries? Why are so many believers frustrated with the enormous gap between what they know about God and how they actually live? In Caught Off Guard, author William P. Smith graciously addresses these seekers who have become dissatisfied with merely "talking theology" and instead yearn to taste and experience the "real thing", a God who longs for relationship with them. With real stories from today and biblical times, Smith demonstrates surprising and often unnoticed attributes of a loving and purposeful God by proving: How God draws near to the radically undeserving How God responds to people who have feeble faith or even active doubt How God will help you as you seek to live a righteous life How God changes the people around you by radically transforming your heart, mind and soul In Caught Off Guard, Smith draws an irresistible picture of the heart of God that shatters conventional wisdom, remains true to biblical principles and invites people to reconsider a deeper trust in our uncontrollable, loving God.

Excerpt from Dr. William Smith's Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. 1: Comprising Its Antiquities, Biography, Geography, and Natural History; A to Gennesaret, Land Of It would be impossible within the limits of a Preface to specify more particularly the assistance obtained in other departments. As each writer is alone responsible for his own contributions, differences of opinion must naturally occur, and the Editors could not take the liberty of altering materially articles thus signed, nor would it have been desirable, if it had been possible to do so. In the present state of Biblical criticism, it is better that different schools should be represented in the Dictionary than that strict uniformity should be secured. In the case of articles which have been revised by other writers, the initials of the original authors have been appended with those of the revisers, but the latter are alone responsible for the articles in their present form. Few articles of any importance have been reprinted without material alteration. The chief exceptions are, for obvious reasons, those by the late Dean Stanley, and the present Bishop of Durham though some of the articles by the latter writer have, at his request, been revised by Professor Ryle of Cambridge. The Book of Judith tells the story of a fictitious Jewish woman beheading the general of the most powerful imaginable army to free her people. The parabolic story was set as an example of how God will help the righteous. Judith's heroic action not only became a validating charter myth of Judaism itself but has also been appropriated by many Christian and secular groupings, and has been an inspiration for numerous literary texts and works of art. It continues to exercise its power over artists, authors and academics and is becoming a major field of research in its own right. The Sword of Judith is the first multidisciplinary collection of essays to discuss representations of Judith throughout the centuries. It transforms our understanding across a wide range of disciplines. The collection includes new archival source studies, the translation of unpublished manuscripts, the translation of texts unavailable in English, and Judith images and music.

In this volume, Gregory Matoesian uses the notorious 1991 rape trial of William Kennedy Smith to provide an in-depth analysis of language use and its role in that specific trial as well as in the law in general. He draws on the fields of conversation analysis, ethnomethodology, linguistic anthropology and social theory to show how language practices shape--and are shaped by--culture and the law, particularly in the social construction of rape as a legal fact. This analysis examines linguistic strategies from both defense and prosecutorial viewpoints, and how they relate to issues of gender, sexual identity, and power.

Charles Edge and Bill Smith provide detailed explanations of the technology required for large-scale Mac OS X deployments and show you how to integrate it with other operating systems and applications. Now in its second edition, Enterprise Mac Administrator's Guide addresses the growing size and spread of Mac OS X deployments in corporations and institutions worldwide. In some cases, this is due to the growth of traditional Mac environments, but for the most part it has to do with organizations instituting device choice and switcher campaigns, where Windows and/or Linux environments are migrating to Mac OS X. There is a steep culture shock with many of these migrations. The products that are used are different, the nomenclature is different, and most importantly the best practices for dealing with the operating system and updates are very different. Apple provides a number of tools to help automate and guide IT toward managing a large number of Mac OS X computers—it has since before Mac OS X was initially released. However, if you want to put together all of the pieces to tell a compelling story about how to run an IT department or a deployment of Macs, you need to compile information from a number of different sources. This book provides explanations of the technology required. What You'll Learn Choose a directory services model that works for your organization and integrate it into your existing model Choose an imaging model and begin imaging workstations with or without third-party products Use the Mac App Store and Apple’s Volume Purchasing Program to deploy apps Leverage scripting techniques to reduce labor for the IT department Provide network services (file sharing, mobile home folders, messaging, etc.) to the Mac OS X clients Who This Book Is For System administrators and IT professionals who need to manage a large number of Mac OS X computers, be they Mac OS X–based servers or workstations. The assumption is that readers are somewhat familiar with Mac OS X and/or IT in general, but not that they are familiar with the Apple system internals, server services, or deployment techniques.
