The Moringa plant is native to Northern India, where it was first described around 2000 B.C. as a medicinal herb. The oral tradition of Ayurvedic medicine in India declared that Moringa prevents 300 diseases Ancient Egyptians treasured Moringa oil as protection for their skin from the ravages of desert weather. Later, the Greeks found many healthful uses for Moringa and introduced it to the Romans. Moringa Oleifera, is very useful and is called the world`s most valuable plant. Virtually every part of it is edible. The leaflets can be stripped from the feathery, fernlike leaves and used in any spinach recipe. Very young plants can be used as a tender vegetable. The flowers can be eaten or used to make a tea and provide good amounts of both calcium and potassium. They are also good for beekeepers. The young pods can be cooked and reportedly have a taste reminiscent of asparagus. The green peas and surrounding white material can be removed from larger pods and cooked in various ways. Seeds from mature pods (which can be 2 feet long) can be browned in a skillet, mashed and placed in boiling water that causes an excellent cooking or lubricating oil to float to the surface. . It is an extremely fast growing tree and it is advisable to prune frequently beginning when they are young or they will become lanky and difficult to harvest. Breaking off tender tips (used in cooking) when the trees are about 4 or 5 feet tall, the trees become much bushier.

Research on the Ayurvedic materia medica, in particular its drugs of plant origin, is a venture bristling with pitfalls despite the apparent confidence displayed in the lists of botanical identifications of medicinal plants in numerous publications on the subject. This self-assurance is unwarranted in quite a few cases, as this study will demonstrate. The majority of these lists of botanical equivalents of Sanskrit plant names are not based on own research; instead, they usually reflect a consensus reached somehow among Indian ayurvedic scholars. The course of events that resulted in this agreement remains uninvestigated. Setting aside the role of leading authorities and trend-setting publications, one of the factors involved may be the significance of a seemingly trustworthy and scientifically-looking pharmacopoeia for the Indian ayurvedici in their competition with western medicine. In this respect the developments referred to are understandable. From a strictly scientific point of view caution is required. When trying to take stock of the situation, one's attention is arrested by the prevalence of North-Indian influences and opinions in the secondary literature on the Indian materia medica. The concurrence mentioned is a North-Indian product that may be looked upon as an artefact since regional differences in the identifications tend to be disregarded. Though exceptions do occur, most often books by authors hailing from northern India fail to pay attention to the plants employed under the same Sanskrit names in southern India and areas such as, for instance, Gujarat and Orissa.

An ethnobotanical case study and market availability analysis of moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) was conducted in Senegal from June 28 to August 31, 2011. In light of the alarmingly high rates of anemia in Senegal, moringa leaf samples were collected in all 14 regions of the country for iron analysis. The results of this study were grouped based on agroecological regions because biophysical and climatic realities have a greater impact on the health and activities of a population than do political regional boundaries. Agroecological regional differences were observed for the availability of moringa products in markets, with the most moringa for sale in the central part of the country. This central region, the Bassin Arachidier, also showed the highest iron content from commercial samples of moringa leaf samples. Results also show a strong relationship between the number of moringa vendors in a market and the iron content in moringa leaves. Higher iron contents were associated with higher numbers of moringa vendors. Numerous moringa products were found to be used for food and medicine throughout Senegal. The most common use in food was in the traditional leaf sauce dish. Medicinally, the most popular uses for moringa were the consumption of fresh or dried leaves to treat diabetes and to regulate blood pressure. Overall moringa was found to be a very useful and economical tree that remains underutilized for its many nutritional and environmental benefits.
