This beautiful and important book highlights the collection of European drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, one of America’s premier university museums. From intimate studies to exquisite finished compositions, this selection of works documents the history of European drawing practices beginning with late-medieval model books and progressing to the verge of the modern period. The accompanying text--written by a team of scholars--offers a unique introduction to various critical and technical aspects of the study of master drawings, brought to life through drawings from a range of national schools and in a variety of media. Among the drawings examined in this handsomely produced volume are an animated pen and ink sketch by Giulio Romano, a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain, a forceful and humorous caricature by Guercino, a scene from the epic poem Orlando Furioso by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and a delicate portrait by Edgar Degas.

Alan Spitzer approaches the history of the French Restoration by examining the experience of a particular age group born between 1792 and 1803: the generation of 1820. A predominantly male, middle-class, educated minority of this group was perceived as representing all that was most promising and specifically youthful in the period. Their response to the pressures of transition was expressed in the fractious behavior of the youth of the schools,'' and in voluntary associations, masonic lodges, conspiratorial cells, and influential journals, which depended on a dense network of personal relationships. Professor Spitzer portrays these connections in a set of sociograms using new techniques for the visual representation of social networks. Originally published in 1987. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Icon of freedom and multiethnic democracy, memorial to Franco-American friendship—the lofty meanings we accord the Statue of Liberty today obscure its turbulent origins in 19th-century politics and art. Francesca Lidia Viano reveals that vibrant history in the fullest account yet of the people and ideas that brought the lady of the harbor to life.

The spectacular transformation of Paris during the 19th century into a city of tree-lined boulevards and public parks both redesigned the capital and inspired the era’s great Impressionist artists. The renewed landscape gave crowded, displaced urban dwellers green spaces to enjoy, while suburbanites and country-dwellers began cultivating their own flower gardens. As public engagement with gardening grew, artists increasingly featured flowers and parks in their work. Public Parks, Private Gardens includes masterworks by artists such as Bonnard, Cassatt, Cézanne, Corot, Daumier, Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse, Monet, and Seurat. Many of these artists were themselves avid gardeners, and they painted parks and gardens as the distinctive scenery of contemporary life. Writing from the perspective of both a distinguished art historian and a trained landscape designer, Colta Ives provides new insights not only into these essential works, but also into this extraordinarily creative period in France’s history.
