Now comes the Japanese in MangaLand Workbook 2, the perfect way for students who have moved beyond the basics to practice and assimilate what they've learned in the textbooks. Designed to complement the second volume in the series, the exercises in this Workbook are more challenging than those in Workbook 1. Each section offers dozens of exercises and activities covering reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and kanji. In addition, the book gives students practice writing hiragana, katakana, and kanji, and optimizes the vocabulary and grammar that was taught in the texts. A special feature is the 36-page manga story created especially for this volume. Students can read and enjoy the manga after studying each lesson. And to further enhance the authenticity of the learning experience, the Workbook is read the "Japanese way," -- from back to front and from right to left.

The Japanese in MangaLand series from JPT introduced students to an engaging and educationally sound way to learn Japanese through the use of manga. In Kanji in MangaLand, the first of three volumes, released in 2007, this same approach was applied to the often-daunting task of mastering the 1,006 basic kanji (ideogram) characters. Aimed at Western students aged 12-25, the Kanji in MangaLand program differs from traditional methods in that it uses distinct drawings for the parts that form each kanji character, then it shows a manga-style illustration to help the student connect the shapes and the meaning. In addition, the books present information on compound words, stroke order, meaning and such unique features as identifying similar-looking kanji and alternative or older shapes for the same character. Kanji in MangaLand 2 picks up where the first volume left off, with 34 lessons covering 400 new kanji characters (the first book had 240 kanji). Each lesson presents 8-12 kanji and exercises, as well as a one-page manga story in which all the new kanji are used; an answer page; translation of the manga; and a summary of the new drawing-compounds that will appear in the next lesson. The book also includes indexes of kanji and readings.

Chapters are organised by communicative function. Each presents several Japanese sentence patterns side-by-side with English equivalents (in the form of simple example sentences). The English equivalents are meant to give the English-speaking learner a clear idea of how the Japanese sentence pattern is actually used. Following each Japanese pattern and English equivalent is an explanation of the Japanese grammar, which gives the reader the necessary information to generate sentences using the pattern introduced. Example sentences in English and Japanese follow. There is also a

Students of Japanese are familiar with the term "particle," and realize that they, like English prepositions, require a special effort to master. This handbook provides all the information one would need on these tricky units of grammar. All About Particles covers more than 70 particles those that are used regularly as well as those used less frequently in more than 200 uses. The book can be approached as a guiding textbook and studied from beginning to end. It is as a reference book, however, that All About Particles shines. It is light and easy to carry, slim enough to fit into the corner of a shoulder bag, and concise enough to quickly clarify particle-related questions. It is a priceless tool for any serious student of Japanese. In its previous incarnation as a part of the Power Japanese Series, ISBN 978-0-87011-954-5, and sold more than 40,000 copies worldwide.

This is the first book in a two-volume intensive one-year introductory course in Japanese, also suitable for those who wish to work at a slower pace. Students who finish this course will have a firm grasp of how the language works and enough knowledge of the writing system to tackle everyday written material with no more than a dictionary. Particular attention is paid to questions of grammar which foreign learners often find difficult, so Book One can also serve as a reference grammar. An Introduction to Modern Japanese uses both spoken and written forms from the outset. There are word lists for each lesson, and a comprehensive vocabulary for the whole course. Book One comprises fifty-two lessons which are accompanied by exercises and word lists in Book Two. The exercises ensure that the student has understood the grammar explained in the relevant lessons and give further practice in reading and recognising characters. Book Two also contains a full vocabulary, Japanese to English and English to Japanese.
