The Creator sat upon the throne, thinking. Behind him stretched the illimitable continent of heaven, steeped in a glory of light and color; before him rose the black night of Space, like a wall. His mighty bulk towered rugged and mountain-like into the zenith, and His divine head blazed there like a distant sun. At His feet stood three colossal figures, diminished to extinction, almost, by contrast -- archangels -- their heads level with His ankle-bone. When the Creator had finished thinking, He said, "I have thought. Behold!" He lifted His hand, and from it burst a fountain-spray of fire, a million stupendous suns, which clove the blackness and soared, away and away and away, diminishing in magnitude and intensity as they pierced the far frontiers of Space, until at last they were but as diamond nailheads sparkling under the domed vast roof of the universe. At the end of an hour the Grand Council was dismissed. They left the Presence impressed and thoughtful, and retired to a private place, where they might talk with freedom. None of the three seemed to want to begin, though all wanted somebody to do it.

Mark Twain (real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835-1910) is probably one of the most known American writers. He was immensely popular in his time, especially noted for his wit and humour, and he is still widely quoted nowadays. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are probably the best known characters of Mark Twain, and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876) is the first book where they appear. Here we read about the games Tom plays with his friends and schoolmates, as pirates, Robin Hood, etc., his flirtations with Becky Thatcher, his search for a hidden treasure, his troubles with "Injun Joe..". This version includes the illustrations of the first edition, by True Williams (I wish I could have used Norman Rockwell's, maybe in 2029), and is proofread (or "smoothread"), which was not easy, because the txt and html versions in PG have different text, and both are different from the 1st edition scans, which is itself inconsistent... Oh, and it is the uncensored text, so don't complain if you find some n-words.

Featured title in the 2018 PBS Great American Reads Whether he's sneaking doughnuts, mooning over a pretty girl, or snookering the local boys to do his work for him, Tom Sawyer is the consummate schemer--but his charm and easygoing nature keep him from being in anyone's bad graces for long. However, when Tom teams up with his friend Huck Finn, their sleepy Missouri town had better watch out. Based on Mark Twain's memories of growing up along the Mississippi River, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is both an idyllic picture of boyhood and an affectionate satire of adult conventions. Published to great success in Europe, Joachim Latacz's book Homer, His Art and His World is now widely available to an English-speaking audience. Homer, His Art and His World takes Homer out of the preserve of specialists, and carefully outlines the historical background to Homer and his poetry. Current perspectives on the Iliad and the Odyssey are explained clearly, and narrow philological questions are deliberately avoided. Written in an accessible style for lovers of Homer and all who would like to be, Latacz's book brings Homer closer to the modern audience as a poet, and not as a historical source. Homer, His Art and His World includes sections on the relevance of Homer to modern issues in literary criticism; on contemporary culture and history, including the Mycenaean era; the renaissance of the eighth century B.C.E.; and the poetical context of Homer's work; as well as specific chapters on the Iliad and Odyssey and features peculiar to each poem. Homer, His Art and His World will be of interest to a broad range of readers, including those interested in the literary history of Western culture. Joachim Latacz is Professor of Greek at the University of Basel, Switzerland. James P. Holoka is Professor of Classics and Ancient History at Eastern Michigan University.
