Bhakti-Yoga is a real, genuine search after the Lord, a search beginning, continuing, and ending in love. One single moment of the madness of extreme love to God brings us eternal freedom. This love cannot be reduced to any earthly benefit, because so long as worldly desires last, that kind of love does not come. Bhakti is greater than karma, greater than Yoga, because these are intended for an object in view, while Bhakti is its own fruition, its own means and its own end. This edition includes the Swami's ten lectures on Bhakti Yoga, plus ten more on the Supreme Devotion called Para-Bhakti.

This book touches the core of Hindu spirituality by presenting its devotional feel, which involves directly connecting to God through the surrender of everyday actions or a love affair with the Divine. It explores the spiritual choices that are available to practicing Hindus, how their beliefs affect their behavior, what they strive for in life, how they plan their evolution, how they progress, and who their role models are. Learn why saints keep requesting for more and more bhakti, why a single chant of the Lord's name is considered sufficient for liberation, how people adore Vishnu and his incarnations, Shiva and Durga, how our style of interaction with society can help us transcend nature, why our approach of selecting a major in college correlates with our spiritual realization, what happens when love becomes complete surrender, and lots more.

Bhakti yoga is a spiritual path or spiritual practice within Hinduism focused on the cultivation of love and devotion toward God. It has been defined as a practice of devotion toward God, solely motivated by the sincere, loving desire to please God, rather than the hope of divine reward or the fear of divine punishment. It is a means toward a state of spiritual liberation or enlightenment through the "realisation", or the attainment of "oneness" with God. Bhakti yoga is often considered by Hindus to be the easiest way for ordinary people to attain such a spiritually liberated state, because although it is a form of yoga, its practice is not as rigorous as most other yogic schools, and it is possible to practice bhakti yoga without needing to become a full-time yogi. The origins of Bhakti can be seen in the upanishads, specifically the Shvetashvatara Upanishad. The Bhagavad Gita, and the Puranas are important scriptures that expound the philosophy of bhakti yoga. Hindu movements in which bhakti yoga is the main practice are called bhakti movements - the major schools of which are Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Shaktism.Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 - 4 July 1902), born Narendra Nath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century. He was a major force in the revival of Hinduism in India, and contributed to the concept of nationalism in colonial India. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is perhaps best known for his speech which began, "Sisters and brothers of America ...," in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.Born into an aristocratic Bengali family of Calcutta, Vivekananda was inclined towards spirituality. He was influenced by his guru, Ramakrishna, from whom he learnt that all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to mankind. After Ramakrishna's death, Vivekananda toured the Indian subcontinent extensively and acquired first-hand knowledge of the conditions prevailing in British India. He later travelled to the United States, representing India at the 1893 Parliament of the World Religions. Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe. In India, Vivekananda is regarded as a patriotic saint and his birthday is celebrated there as National Youth Day.

The long-awaited, complete guide to the popular, vigorous American method of yoga that is deeply rooted in ancient wisdom and scriptures “In this day and age of health and fitness trends, it is assuring to know that Sharon and David encourage their students to draw inspiration from the classical texts of Yoga and timeless scriptural sources. What I appreciate so much about David and Sharon is how they help their Yoga students to understand and appreciate the wisdom of all the great saints and jivamuktas who have contributed to raising consciousness. Ultimately, it is Self-Realization, that is the true goal of Yoga.” –SRI SWAMI SATCHIDANANDA Creators of the extremely popular Jivamukti Yoga method and cofounders of the New York City studios where it is taught, Sharon Gannon and David Life present their unique style of yoga for the first time in book form. As they explain their intensely physical and spiritual system of flowing postures, they provide inspiring expert instruction to guide you in your practice. Unlike many books about yoga, Jivamukti Yoga focuses not only on the physical postures but also on how they evolved–the origins of the practices in yoga’s ancient sacred texts and five-thousand-year-old traditions–the psychotherapeutic benefits that accrue with a steady practice, and the spiritual power that is set free when energy flows throughout the mind and body. Jivamukti Yoga, which means “soul liberation,” guides your body and soul into spiritual freedom, physical strength, peace of mind, better health, and Self-realization–the ultimate goal of any practice. Gannon and Life help you understand each of the practices that comprise the yoga path to enlightenment: AHIMSA–The Way of Compassion: choosing nonviolence, respecting all life, practicing vegetarianism, living free of prejudice ASANA–The Way of Connection to the Earth: postures and sequences, breathing, transforming energy, understanding the bandhas KARMA–The Way of Action: creating good karma, giving thanks NADAM–The Way of Sacred Music: appreciating the sacred sounds of yoga MEDITATION–The Way of the Witness: how to sit still and move inward BHAKTI–The Way of Devotion to God: living with love, grace, and peace Whatever yoga you practice, Jivamukti Yoga will help you to strengthen and deepen that practice and lead you onto a path of spiritual clarity and self-discovery. “If there is only one book you read about the practice of Yoga, this should be the one. Sharon and David are deeply dedicated students and teachers of Yoga who have the rare capacity to translate their profound understanding to the reader. This book is for anyone who wishes to find transformation through Yoga. I’m grateful for their work and teaching.” –STEPHAN RECHTSCHAFFEN, MD Co-founder & CEO, Omega Institute From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Bhagavad Gita, a scripture, is summarized as REFLECTIONS of Essays of 700 verses among 18 chapters. This takes you, a reader, to find your own qualifications as Devotee of God, in Chapter 12, to basic facts of Spirituality. This also explains doctrine of reincarnation, creation of life and the soul resides in each and every being. My personal reflections is to approach systematic in one book for a person who is willing to see oneself as devotee of God. A Yoga of Self-discipline, a necessary mental conditioning for lessening the distorting effects of sensations by developing a resistance with power of mind. We find that Gita teaches the desire to produce less contrast with object of senses, and this creeps in consciousness who is not watchful of his feelings to control. Attachment to pleasure or aversion to pain both destroy the equilibrium of inner nature. Further, my reflections lead that Gita advice by which true happiness and freedom can be attained. A worldly person is influenced by extreme vibrations of activity, thus entangled in matter. Yoga practicing person reverses his consciousness into inner activity of cosmic vibrations and becomes One with God. Gita, in order to keep Maya sustained, demands that a system of law of evolution and dissolution ('Prakarta-sristi-pralaya'), consisting of 108 years is followed in the world.
